If you want good and original ringtones then you can always find it over the internet,you can go to i tunes website and download ringtones from there and also there are so many websites which offer i phone ringtones you camn find them on google.

Is there any site where you can down free ring tones for the Iphone? I really don't want to have to pay for them. Would it be possible to convert a song myself so that I could use it as a ringtone?

Take a look at the Podcast section of iTunes and you will find some free podcasts that provide ring tones.

I found a really good tutorial on how to create free ringtones for your iPhone. In 31 steps (sounds like a lot but it really isn't) it will show you how to take an ordinary song, convert it, trim it and then put it into your iPhone.
